How Vermicomposting Works
Organic materials are first digested anaerobically with cow dung inoculation, producing biogas. The digestate is separated into liquid manure and biosolids.
The biosolids are placed in windrows with earthworms (Red Wigglers, Eisenia fetida) to produce vermicompost.
Moisture is maintained by occasionally spraying water.
Extracting biogas before composting prevents greenhouse gas emissions, reduces heat, and eliminates the need for turning windrows.
Earthworms consume waste, digest it, and release nutrient-rich worm castings.
Depending on waste volume and worm population, the process takes a few weeks to months.
The final vermicompost is harvested and used as a fertilizer or soil amendment.
Uses of Vermicompost
